Part 1: Archives 

 

 

Ningbo Archives holds more than 370 general archives with 170,000 volumes (pcs) of archives, divided into two sections: pre-liberation archives and post-liberation archives. In terms of categories, those archives include documents, archives of technology and archives of various specific fields; while in terms of medium, they are classified into archives of pictures, acoustic image and definite object. Secretarial documents account for a large proportion of the archives

 

The pre-liberation archives include archives of the Qing Dynasty, revolutionary archives and archives of the Minguo Period, with 52 general archives, totaling 9586 volumes.

 

The archives of the Qing Dynasty total 43 volumes with 229 pieces. The earliest dated back to 1711 (Qianlong Period). The archives, sporadic and unsystematic, are mostly deeds and contracts for land and property, imperial mandates, examination papers for pupils, public order notices for protection of churches and circular notes to churches, etc.

The revolutionary archives total 300 volumes, most of which are hand-sheet duplicates, including documents, letters, maps, diaries, pictures, stories, memoirs, etc, that were related to underground party organizations in Ningbo area and the guerillas in East Zhejiang. There are also publications and newspapers of that time.

Archives of the Minguo Period are the main part of pre-liberation archives, totaling 9,243 volumes. They include documents of county governments, local party branches and youth organizations of Kuomintang, and documents of other organizations such as chamber of commerce, unions, schools and churches.

Postliberation archives are composed of archives from various organs of county level and organs and enterprises of city level. There are 320 general archives with a total 160,000 volumes (pcs). The archives are the original information and first-hand record of the course of socialist construction by Ninbo people, reflecting development of Ningbo in economy, politics and culture since the liberation.

2.1 Documents  

Documents account over half of the material owned by Ningbo Archives. They can be divided into many catogaries including assembled file, personnel, education, culture, sports, united front, work concerning the masses, politics and law, foreign affairs, management of planned economy, finance, commerce and trade, scientific research, coastal open cities and special economic zone, reference books, books of history and chorography, and genealogies.

2.3 Newspapers

 

 

 

Current Events Newspaper
Ningbo Archives owns quite a large number of newspapers, which fall into 100 categories, totaling 6000 volumes. The newspapers issued after 1949 are quite complete and the earliest pre-liberation newspaper dates back to 1913. Current Events Newspaper (From June, 1920 to October 1948) has been well kept. Those newspapers constitute an important feature of the Ningbo Archives.  
 Ningbo Archives owns a limited number of books, totaling over 2,000. They can be categorized into 8 sections, including Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought, philosophy, politics and law, economy, culture, literature, history and geography.
Part 2 Books, Newspapers and documents  Among the collections there are 23,000 volumes of books, newspapers and other documents, including over 600 maps.
